Their marriage lasted for almost six decades. While Parton became a worldwide superstar, Dean preferred to stay away from the spotlight and live a quiet life in Tennessee. The couple often described themselves as very different, but Parton believed those differences helped make their relationship work.

Although Parton and Dean never became parents, the singer revealed that having children was something they had discussed early in their marriage.
In a 2014 interview with The Guardian, Parton explained that they had even imagined what their children might look like and had chosen a name for a daughter.
The couple planned to name a girl Carla, but Parton said those dreams ultimately were “not meant to be.”

Parton later revealed that her health played a major role in why she could not have children. She was diagnosed with endometriosis, a condition that can affect the reproductive system and make pregnancy difficult.
Her condition eventually became severe enough that she underwent a partial hysterectomy when she was 36.
Looking back on that period in her life, Parton described it as a very difficult time. In her 2023 book Behind the Seams: My Life in Rhinestones, she recalled feeling as though she had suddenly become a middle-aged woman.
After the surgery, Parton was unable to become pregnant.

In her conversation with The Guardian, she explained that if she had been able to have children, she might have made a very different decision about her career.
She believed she could have struggled with leaving her children while traveling and working, and said she might have given up her career to stay home with them.
At the same time, Parton later recognized that not having children gave her a level of freedom that helped shape her extraordinary career.
During a 2020 interview with Oprah Winfrey, she explained that because she did not have children and Dean was independent, she had more freedom to focus on her work.
That freedom allowed Parton to spend decades writing songs, recording music, performing, acting and building her business empire.

She also created Dollywood, where families became an important part of the experience, and released the children’s album I Believe in You in 2017.
Parton once offered a simple explanation for why she believed she was never meant to have children.
“I think it probably was his plan for me not to have kids so everybody’s kids could be mine,” she told TODAY in 2017. “And they are now.”
Although Parton and Carl Dean never had children together, her influence reached generations of young people through her family, music and charitable work.
Parton died on August 25, 2026, at age 80.
