Ingredients
→ Bread Bowl
4 round sourdough bread bowls
2 tablespoons melted butter
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon dried parsley
→ Mac and Cheese
12 oz (340 g) elbow macaroni
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 cups whole milk
1 cup heavy cream
2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
½ cup Monterey Jack cheese, shredded
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon onion powder
Salt, to taste
Black pepper, to taste
→ Topping
½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
Chopped parsley
Freshly cracked black pepper
Steps
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
Cook the macaroni until al dente according to the package directions. Drain and set aside.
Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute.
Slowly whisk in the milk and heavy cream until smooth. Simmer until slightly thickened. Stir in the cheddar, mozzarella, and Monterey Jack cheeses until fully melted. Season with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
Fold the cooked macaroni into the cheese sauce until evenly coated.
Cut the tops off the sourdough bread bowls and hollow out the centers, leaving about ½ inch of bread around the edges.
Brush the inside of each bread bowl with melted butter mixed with garlic powder and parsley.
Fill each bread bowl with the creamy mac and cheese. Top with the remaining cheddar and mozzarella.
Bake for 10–15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and lightly golden.
Garnish with chopped parsley and freshly cracked black pepper before serving.
Tips
- Sourdough bread works best because it holds the cheese sauce without becoming soggy.
- Grate cheese from a block for the smoothest and creamiest sauce.
- Do not overcook the pasta; it will continue cooking in the oven.
- Add crispy bacon, grilled chicken, or pulled beef for a heartier meal.
- Broil for 1–2 minutes at the end for a golden, bubbly cheese topping.
- Best served immediately while the bread is crisp and the cheese is hot and stretchy.
