How long had they been waiting there?

In Yavapai County, Arizona, miles of stark Sonoran desert stretch from the middle of the state up into its northern plateaus. Here, in this dry climate, temperatures can reach up to 91 degrees Fahrenheit, even during the cooler fall months.
A few weeks ago, an outdoorsman was scouting this area when he noticed something unusual. There appeared to be a pair of fluffy brown dogs in the desert up ahead. The pups were tied to an overturned bike, with no food or water in sight.

The man couldn’t believe it.
“[He] was concerned for the dogs’ wellbeing,” a representative from the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO) told The Dodo. “He wasn’t sure how long they had been out there unattended.”

The Good Samaritan quickly contacted YCSO for help. Two officers drove to the scene, and when they arrived, they were equally stunned.
“[Two] beautiful pups were abandoned,” YSCO wrote in a Facebook post.
The pups were understandably a bit cautious around humans, and they barked at the police officers when they first arrived. The patient rescuers gave the dogs a few minutes to calm down. They tossed the pups a few dog treats, hoping to gain their trust.
After the dogs relaxed, the officers gently contained them using a rescue pole. They snipped them free from the bike and moved them into their rescue vehicle. Finally, these pups were headed out of the desert to safety.

Officers took the pups to a local humane society, where team members gave them food and water and allowed them space to unwind. Sheltered and cared for, the dogs now have everything they need to ensure much brighter days ahead.
