Olympic Silver Medalist Auctions Her Medal to Help Save a Baby — Then the Winning Company Gives It Back

Just days after standing on the Olympic podium, Polish javelin thrower Maria Andrejczyk made a decision that showed her silver medal meant more to her than personal glory.

After returning home from the Tokyo Olympics with a silver medal, Andrejczyk learned about 8-month-old Miłoszek, a Polish baby who urgently needed expensive heart treatment.

His family was trying to raise the money needed for the procedure, and Andrejczyk decided she wanted to help in an extraordinary way.

She put her newly won Olympic silver medal up for auction, with the proceeds going toward the child’s medical fundraising campaign.

The gesture was especially remarkable because the medal represented years of training, sacrifice and competition at the highest level of international sports. Yet Andrejczyk was prepared to part with it if doing so could help give a child a chance at treatment.

The auction was ultimately won by Żabka, a major Polish convenience-store company, with a bid reportedly worth about $125,000.

The money went toward the effort to fund Miłoszek’s treatment.

But Żabka had one more surprise.

After making the winning contribution, the company returned the Olympic medal to Andrejczyk, saying it wanted the athlete to keep the award she had worked so hard to earn.

The result was a rare moment in which generosity inspired even more generosity: the child’s fundraising campaign received a major financial boost, while Andrejczyk was able to keep her Olympic medal.

For Andrejczyk, however, the medal’s value was never simply about the metal hanging around her neck. She was willing to give away one of the greatest achievements of her athletic career to help a child she did not personally know.

And when Żabka returned it, the medal gained an entirely different kind of meaning.

It was no longer only a symbol of Olympic success.

It had also become a symbol of compassion, sacrifice and the extraordinary things that can happen when one act of kindness inspires another.
