At 19, Joe Henley Had Never Played A Bar, Festival Or Even A Real Live Gig…

Riley Green Joins 19-Year-Old Joe Henley on Stage as Kelly Clarkson Fights to Win Him for Team Kelly

Riley Green barely had time to settle into his new coaching chair on The Voice before finding a country singer he clearly wanted on his team.

During the Season 30 premiere on September 21, 19-year-old Joe Henley delivered a striking performance of Travis Tritt’s “Anymore,” prompting both Green and Kelly Clarkson to turn their chairs. What followed was a playful battle between the two coaches, with Clarkson repeatedly trying to keep Henley’s attention away from Green.

In the end, however, Henley’s choice was clear. The young Alabama singer joined Team Riley, and Green even left his chair to perform alongside him.

Joe Henley immediately caught the coaches’ attention

Henley stepped onto the The Voice stage with a particularly challenging introduction. According to NBC, the 19-year-old had never played a “real gig” before appearing on the show.

For his Blind Audition, he chose Travis Tritt’s “Anymore.” As soon as Henley began singing, both Green and Clarkson turned their chairs. His traditional country sound quickly made him one of the standout performers of the opening night.

Adam Levine and Queen Latifah also listened through the entire performance before eventually turning their chairs.

Henley’s audition was especially notable because of how naturally he appeared to fit the country music setting. His voice and song choice immediately connected him with Green, who was making his debut as a coach on the show.

Kelly Clarkson quickly realized she had competition

While Henley continued singing, Clarkson seemed unwilling to simply sit back and let Green make his case.

Henley repeatedly looked toward Green during the performance, prompting Clarkson to playfully tell him, “No…no, no!” She even moved between the singer and Green, making it clear that she had noticed where his attention was going.

The moment became a group singalong as the coaches enjoyed Henley’s performance. By the end, all four coaches were engaged with what they had just heard.

Queen Latifah and Levine eventually turned their chairs as well, with Queen Latifah reacting with an enthusiastic “Wow!”

Green immediately made his interest known.

“That’s my boy right there,” he said.

Clarkson quickly fired back with a joking “Shut up!”

The competition became even more personal when Henley revealed that he was from Alabama, the same state where Green was born and raised. Clarkson’s reaction was immediate: “Oh my God!”

Adam Levine playfully ran toward Clarkson and then over to Green as the coaches took in the Alabama connection.

Henley admitted he was drawn to Riley Green

After the performance, Green tried to get some one-on-one time with Henley.

“Let’s just talk, it’s just me and you here,” Green told him.

Clarkson was quick to point out what she believed was already obvious.

“I think it is…’cause he was singing it to you,” she said.

Once again, Clarkson positioned herself between the two country singers as she tried to pull Henley toward Team Kelly.

Henley explained that he kept looking at Green because of his “eyes,” and Queen Latifah agreed that there was clearly a connection between the contestant and the new coach.

Clarkson still had plenty to say in her own defense. She reminded Henley that she had won The Voice with country singers before and argued that he could become the only country superstar on her team.

“I have won this show, man, with country singers…plural,” Clarkson told him.

Queen Latifah and Levine also praised Henley, telling him that he sounded “amazing” as the audience cheered.

But Green had another advantage: Henley was already familiar with his music.

Green discovers he is Henley’s favorite

Green asked Henley about the artists who had influenced him.

The teenager named several country favorites, including Travis Tritt, Keith Whitley, Don Williams and George Strait.

Green then asked about himself.

Henley told him he had not yet reached his number one favorite.

That answer caught Green’s attention, and the conversation eventually turned to Henley’s favorite Riley Green song: “My Way.”

Green’s reaction was immediate.

He picked up a guitar and walked onto the stage.

Riley Green leaves his chair for an impromptu duet

The unexpected performance became one of the premiere’s most memorable moments.

Green joined Henley on stage with his guitar and began performing “My Way” with him. Henley sang alongside the coach he had just identified as his favorite artist, while the other coaches and the audience watched.

Even Clarkson, who had spent much of the segment trying to convince Henley to choose her, could not resist joining in during the performance.

The spontaneous duet underscored the connection that had developed between the two Alabama country singers during the audition. It also gave Green one final opportunity to show Henley what working together might look like.

The performance made the decision that followed considerably more difficult for Clarkson, but Henley ultimately stayed with his original connection.

Joe Henley chooses Team Riley

Despite Clarkson’s determined efforts, Henley ultimately chose Riley Green as his coach.

“I love you, Miss Kelly, so much. I promise. But I’m gonna go with Mr. Riley Green,” Henley told Clarkson.

The decision sent the 19-year-old country singer to Team Riley for Season 30.

For Green, it was an especially meaningful start to his first season as a Voice coach. Henley had impressed him with a classic country performance, shared his love for traditional country artists, and revealed that one of Green’s own songs was his favorite.

Henley’s Blind Audition had begun with him singing Travis Tritt’s “Anymore” for the coaches. It ended with him sharing the stage with Riley Green and becoming part of Team Riley.

Season 30 of The Voice premiered September 21, 2026, with Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine, Riley Green and Queen Latifah serving as coaches. For Henley, the opening night delivered an unexpected opportunity: a chair turn from two coaches, a playful showdown between Clarkson and Green, and an impromptu duet with the coach he ultimately chose.

The 19-year-old Alabama singer now moves forward in the competition as a member of Team Riley.
