A fluffy black dog has captured the internet’s attention after a confusing photo left viewers wondering whether they were looking at a pet — or some kind of tiny one-eyed creature.
At first glance, the image appears to show a small black animal covered in thick fur with one enormous eye staring straight at the camera. The unusual appearance was convincing enough to leave plenty of people trying to figure out exactly what they were seeing.
Fortunately, the explanation is far less mysterious.
The animal is actually a black Pomeranian, and the supposed giant “eye” in the center of its face is really the dog’s nose.
Because the Pomeranian’s coat is so thick and dark, its actual eyes nearly disappear into the surrounding fur. A small patch of lighter-colored fur underneath the nose makes the illusion even more convincing, creating what looks like the face of a strange, one-eyed animal.
Only after looking closely do the dog’s real eyes become visible on either side of its nose. Once viewers notice them, the entire image suddenly makes sense.
The photo is a perfect example of how lighting, perspective and a particularly fluffy coat can trick the human brain into seeing something completely different from reality.
There’s no alien and no mysterious one-eyed creature behind the viral image — just an exceptionally fluffy Pomeranian whose face accidentally created one of the internet’s most amusing optical illusions.
And perhaps that is exactly why the picture is so entertaining: once you finally see the dog’s real face, it becomes almost impossible to understand how you missed it in the first place.
