Lady A’s Charles Kelley Reveals Rare Cancer Diagnosis At 45

Charles Kelley reveals rare blood cancer diagnosis as Lady A singer vows to keep working

Charles Kelley has revealed that he is battling multiple myeloma, a rare form of blood cancer, after unexplained rib fractures led doctors to carry out a series of blood tests.

The 45-year-old Lady A co-lead vocalist shared the news on Tuesday, September 29, in an emotional video filmed with his wife, Cassie. Despite the seriousness of the diagnosis, Kelley said he remains hopeful and intends to continue performing while undergoing treatment.

The Nashville-based country star explained that his diagnosis came after doctors investigated the unexpected fractures.

“I had a couple random rib fractures that happened,” Kelley said, explaining that the injuries prompted his doctor to order several different blood tests.

“One of the last blood tests we did, they found a blood cancer in there called multiple myeloma, and it’s rare,” he told fans.

Multiple myeloma is a cancer of plasma cells, a type of white blood cell found in the bone marrow. The disease can affect bones and other parts of the body, and weakened bones can be vulnerable to fractures.

For Kelley, however, the diagnosis has not changed his determination to remain active.

He said advances in treatment have given him considerable reason to be optimistic, particularly compared with the options available several years ago.

“I’m young, and I feel healthy, and the treatments, I will say, have just come so far even in the past five years, that life expectancy just far exceeds what it used to be. I feel really hopeful, I really do,” he said.

Kelley also made it clear that he does not intend to put his music career on hold.

Lady A has a new album in the works, while the group is preparing for its This Winter’s Night Tour, which is scheduled to begin in December.

The singer expects the early stages of treatment to be manageable enough for him to continue working.

“This first six months of treatment, I believe, is not going to be too super invasive, that I can still work. I think physically, I will feel like myself. I’ll have tough days, but I wanna keep working,” Kelley said.

Recent performances have reinforced that decision.

Kelley said he had already learned about his diagnosis when he performed in Kansas and Oklahoma, and being back on stage helped remind him how much he wanted to continue doing what he loves.

“Even going out last weekend after even knowing the news, was like, ‘This is where I belong.’ I need to be happy and doing what I love to do,” he said.

Kelley has also chosen to speak openly about the diagnosis, much as he previously did with his struggle with alcohol.

He entered a treatment facility in 2022 and marked four years of sobriety in July. He said that sharing difficult experiences publicly had helped him before and that he wanted to approach his cancer diagnosis in a similar way.

“In the spirit of the same way we’ve shared my sobriety journey, just getting this stuff off your chest is so freeing and it takes the power away from it a little bit,” he explained.

The singer said his approach to the cancer diagnosis is rooted in the same philosophy that has supported his sobriety.

“In sobriety, it’s all about one day at a time, and that we’re not in control, so that’s the way we’re looking at it. Right now, I feel great,” he said.

Kelley said he is also drawing encouragement from a friend who was diagnosed with the same cancer roughly two months earlier.

That experience has given him another source of perspective as he prepares to begin treatment.

His announcement quickly prompted an outpouring of support from fellow musicians, including his Lady A bandmates Hillary Scott and Dave Haywood.

Scott responded to the announcement with a message of affection and encouragement, writing: “The strongest duo right there! Love y’all so much! You got this!”

Haywood also offered his support, writing: “Covering you in prayer brother. Love y’all. We’re all here for you!”

Other members of the country music community also sent messages of encouragement, including Martina McBride, Dan + Shay’s Shay Mooney, Brittney Spencer and Jake Owen.

Kelley has continued to emphasize hope as he prepares for the months ahead. While he acknowledged that treatment will bring difficult days, he said he feels healthy now and wants to keep working, performing and doing what he loves.

For the singer, sharing the diagnosis is another step in facing a difficult period openly, just as he did during his sobriety journey.

“I just feel like there’s gotta be purpose to everything,” Kelley said after announcing the diagnosis. “I’m just hopeful, man.”

Lady A’s upcoming plans remain centered on new music and the group’s December This Winter’s Night Tour, as Kelley prepares to balance treatment with his career.
