Why this Recipe Works

When you’re craving something hearty, these chicken thighs are an excellent option. Smothered in a savory and flavorful gravy, the slow cooker ensures they stay juicy and tender.

Great to serve with mashed potatoes and your favorite veggie side, this will become an instant family favorite, and you’ll love how easy it is to make on busy weeknights or for Sunday dinner!

If you can’t get enough of saucy dinners, my Smothered Chicken Burritos and Smothered Pork Chops are other amazing choices.

Ingredients Needed

  • Brown Gravy Mix: This shortcut ingredient is a convenient way to easily create a delicious gravy!
  • Chicken Thighs: I typically use bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs for this recipe.
  • Onions and Garlic: Add amazing savory flavor.
  • Mushrooms: Provide some earthiness that pairs well with the tender chicken.
  • Seasonings: A combination of garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, Italian seasoning, salt and black pepper help infuse the gravy and chicken with lots of flavor.

How to Make this Slow Cooker Smothered Chicken

  • Step 1: In the slow cooker, whisk together the gravy packet and water.
  • Step 2: Add onion and garlic to the bottom of the slow cooker and place chicken on top. Sprinkle with the seasonings and cover.
  • Step 3: Cook on high for 3 to 4 hours or on low for 6 to 7 hours.
  • Step 4: In the last hour of cooking, add the sliced mushrooms.

Recipe Tips

  • Serve these chicken thighs over mashed potatoes or your favorite pasta.
  • Feel free to omit the mushrooms if you’re not a fan.
  • Chicken breasts can be used instead of thighs–you’ll need to reduce the cooking time a bit.
  • If you have leftovers, transfer to an airtight container and store in the fridge for 2 to 3 days.
  • Reheat chicken thighs one at a time in the microwave, or if you have a lot of leftovers they can be returned to the slow cooker and warmed up that way.
