Robert Redford spent decades as one of Hollywood’s most famous leading men, sharing the screen with stars like Barbra Streisand and Jane Fonda. But away from the cameras, his most enduring love story was far more private.
For nearly three decades, Redford shared his life with German artist Sibylle Szaggars. They met in the late 1990s at Sundance and married in 2009. Redford once described her simply as “a very special person,” saying their relationship brought a whole new chapter to his life.
What made their connection unusual was that Sibylle wasn’t captivated by his Hollywood fame. Their bond grew around art, nature and environmental causes rather than celebrity. They largely kept their relationship away from the spotlight and remained together until Redford’s death at 89 in September 2025.
For a man millions knew as a romantic movie star, the relationship that lasted was the one that happened mostly when the cameras weren’t watching.
