Kacey Musgraves Brings Ronnie Dunn Onstage for “Neon Moon” in Nashville, Dressed as Ronnie Dunn
Kacey Musgraves had a very specific surprise waiting for fans at her Nashville show: Ronnie Dunn himself, a duet on “Neon Moon,” and a costume that made the whole moment even better.
During her September 28, 2026, stop at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on the Middle of Nowhere Tour, Musgraves brought the Brooks & Dunn legend onto the stage. The two performed “Neon Moon” together, but Musgraves made sure there was one more joke in the setup. She was dressed as Dunn once again.
The Nashville shows were part of Musgraves’ Middle of Nowhere Tour, with performances at Bridgestone Arena on September 27 and 28.
For anyone familiar with Musgraves and Dunn’s history, “Neon Moon” was a particularly fitting choice. Musgraves appeared on Brooks & Dunn’s first Reboot album in 2019, contributing to the duo’s new version of the classic song with Kix Brooks and Dunn. Reboot II followed in 2024 with a different group of guest artists.
But this particular bit actually started months earlier.
Here’s another angle:
Kacey Musgraves’ Ronnie Dunn disguise
Back in March, Musgraves showed up unexpectedly at Robert’s Western World in Nashville and took the stage to perform “Neon Moon.”
The twist was that she had dressed up as Ronnie Dunn.
And she went much further than simply putting on a cowboy hat and calling it a day.
Musgraves recreated Dunn’s look with jeans, a shirt, belt, sunglasses, facial hair and a wig. She even added some of Dunn’s recognizable tattoos, including the “Cowboy” tattoo on his forearm.
The surprise performance took place at Robert’s Western World on March 22, 2026. Reports from the night noted that some people in the crowd initially did not realize who was under the disguise.
The costume was convincing enough to cause some genuine confusion, particularly with the sunglasses, facial hair and tattoo details.
Musgraves later shared video of the stunt on Instagram with Brooks & Dunn’s “Play Something Country” playing in the background. She tied the joke to her then-new release, “Dry Spell,” writing:
“OMW to end your dry spell.”
She also added a disclaimer of sorts in the comments:
“Btw Ronnie did nothing to deserve this.”
Dunn, however, did not seem particularly offended.
Instead, he gave the costume his own seal of approval, commenting:
“Damn, I look good! RD.”
His reaction was also reported at the time by other outlets covering the Nashville prank
The joke made its way to Bridgestone Arena
Fast-forward to September 28, and Musgraves decided to bring the bit back for a much bigger audience.
During her Bridgestone Arena performance, she stopped and told the crowd:
“You guys stay put. I gotta go get somebody. Hold on.”
Given that Musgraves was performing in Nashville, there were plenty of possibilities for who might walk onto the stage.
Then Ronnie Dunn appeared.
The two reunited for “Neon Moon,” giving the Nashville crowd a live version of a song that already connects their careers.
And Musgraves was once again dressed as Dunn.
That detail turned what was already a major surprise guest appearance into a full-circle callback to her March appearance at Robert’s Western World.
The September 28 concert was officially part of Musgraves’ Middle of Nowhere Tour at Bridgestone Arena, where Flatland Cavalry served as the special guest.
Videos from the performance show Dunn joining Musgraves onstage as she once again committed to the Ronnie Dunn look. The reaction from the crowd made it clear that the costume was very much part of the joke.
And Dunn appeared to be having fun with it.
Here’s another angle:
A reunion built around “Neon Moon”
There is something especially fitting about Musgraves choosing “Neon Moon” for both surprise appearances.
Her connection to the song goes back to the 2019 Reboot project, where she joined Brooks & Dunn on their updated version. Years later, she turned the song into the centerpiece of an elaborate Ronnie Dunn impersonation in Nashville.
The March performance was a small, unexpected appearance at a Broadway honky-tonk. The September performance put the same joke in front of an arena crowd, this time with Dunn himself standing beside her.
The result was a memorable Nashville moment that combined a longtime country hit, an established musical connection and one very committed costume.
Musgraves has already shown that fans never quite know what she might do when she is in Nashville. This time, she managed to turn a March joke into a full-circle duet with the man she had been impersonating.
And judging by Dunn’s earlier reaction, he seems perfectly happy with the way she pulled it off.
“Neon Moon”
Musgraves and Brooks & Dunn’s 2019 version of “Neon Moon” remains the musical link at the center of the whole story, making the Nashville reunion feel especially appropriate.
