Luke Bryan Thought He Knew Chris Stapleton

Luke Bryan Says Chris Stapleton Had Him “Falling In Love” During Emotional “Drink A Beer” Duet

Chris Stapleton has a habit of making fellow singers pay close attention when he performs. Luke Bryan discovered just how intense that eye contact can be when the two finally shared the stage for a full rendition of “Drink A Beer” in Nashville.

During a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Bryan looked back on the performance and joked that Stapleton spends so much time watching his duet partner’s lips that it can be surprisingly intimidating.

For Bryan, though, the moment was also a long-awaited one. Stapleton co-wrote “Drink A Beer,” one of Bryan’s most personal and successful songs, years before Stapleton became one of country music’s biggest stars.

A song that has always meant something personal to Luke Bryan

“Drink A Beer” was written by Chris Stapleton and Jim Beavers and released in 2013 as the third single from Bryan’s fourth studio album, Crash My Party.

The song quickly became one of the defining tracks of Bryan’s career. It eventually reached No. 1 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart, becoming another major chart success for the singer.

But its significance for Bryan goes well beyond the numbers.

He has spoken openly about the personal connection he has to the song because of the deaths of his brother, Chris, in 1996 and his sister, Kelly, in 2007. When Bryan performed “Drink A Beer” at the 2013 CMA Awards, he dedicated the emotional performance to his siblings. Stapleton, who had co-written the song, joined him onstage.

Stapleton was also part of the original recording. He provided background vocals on Bryan’s album version, meaning his voice was already woven into the song long before his own solo career exploded.

At the time, however, Stapleton was primarily known within Nashville as a songwriter and musician. His later rise as a solo artist would completely change how audiences viewed him.

That history made the reunion at Bryan’s recent Nashville concert particularly meaningful.

Stapleton joined Bryan at Bridgestone Arena

Bryan celebrated the release of his ninth studio album, Signs, with a special concert at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville on September 24, 2026.

The event, billed as “Luke Bryan & Friends,” brought together a long list of country stars, including Carrie Underwood, Darius Rucker, Jason Aldean, Kane Brown, Dierks Bentley and Chris Stapleton. The concert was announced as a celebration of Signs, which was released on September 18.

Stapleton’s appearance gave Bryan the opportunity to revisit “Drink A Beer” with the songwriter himself.

The two had performed the song together at the 2013 CMA Awards, but with both artists’ careers moving in very different directions over the following years, opportunities to perform it together have been limited.

Bryan described their latest performance as finally getting the chance to share a genuinely intimate musical moment.

Luke Bryan’s favorite singer had him feeling a little nervous

While talking about the Nashville concert with Jimmy Fallon, Bryan made it clear just how highly he regards Stapleton.

He called Stapleton his favorite singer and said he would put him at the very top of his personal “Mount Rushmore” of singers.

Then came the part that had Fallon and the audience laughing.

Bryan explained that he had not previously realized how closely Stapleton watches his duet partner while singing. Rather than simply looking out toward the crowd, Stapleton locks his attention onto the other singer and watches their mouth.

According to Bryan, that made the performance feel surprisingly intense.

“He really stares at you,” Bryan said, explaining that Stapleton is watching his lips while they sing together.

Bryan admitted that the attention was intimidating, but he turned the situation into a joke, saying that he was “kinda falling in love” during the performance.

He also connected the habit to Stapleton’s Kentucky and bluegrass background, joking that musicians from that tradition are accustomed to watching one another closely while singing.

The joke landed because the setting itself was so sincere. Bryan was standing beside the songwriter who had helped create one of the most emotional songs of his career, and that songwriter had returned years later as a superstar in his own right.

The two artists have shared the song before

Their connection through “Drink A Beer” goes back to the song’s original recording.

Stapleton and Beavers wrote the song before Stapleton became a household name, and Stapleton contributed background vocals to Bryan’s version. He later joined Bryan for the song at the 2013 CMA Awards, when “Drink A Beer” was still a new release.

Bryan has previously explained that the song affected him immediately when he first heard it. The story of losing someone close and quietly dealing with that absence gave the song a very different meaning once he brought his own family history to it.

That makes the latest performance at Bridgestone Arena more than a simple collaboration between two country stars. It reunited Bryan with the songwriter behind a song that has remained closely tied to some of the most personal experiences of his life.

From Nashville songwriter to Bryan’s favorite singer

There is also something striking about the timing.

When “Drink A Beer” was released in 2013, Stapleton was known primarily within the country music world as a songwriter and musician. In the years that followed, his solo career transformed him into one of the genre’s most recognizable voices.

Bryan has now gone from recording a Stapleton composition to describing Stapleton as his favorite singer.

The two artists also arrived at the recent performance from different places in their careers. Bryan was celebrating the release of Signs, while Stapleton returned to a song he helped write more than a decade earlier.

Signs was released September 18 and contains 12 tracks, including “Finders Keepers,” a collaboration between Bryan and Luke Combs.

For Bryan, however, having Stapleton onstage for “Drink A Beer” appears to have been one of the most memorable moments of the entire night.

And judging from his story on The Tonight Show, the musical reunion came with an unexpected bonus: discovering exactly how closely Chris Stapleton watches the person standing beside him.

Bryan may have found it intimidating, but he certainly seemed to enjoy the experience.

After all, when the person staring back at you is the songwriter behind one of your most meaningful songs and the singer you consider your favorite, a little stage tension probably comes with the territory.
