Just days before the Season 30 premiere of The Voice, the show’s new coaching lineup is giving viewers an early taste of what they can expect from the season.
Riley Green, Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine and Queen Latifah have teamed up for a performance of The Band’s classic song “The Weight,” bringing four very different musical styles together for a relaxed, soulful rendition.
The performance was premiered by Rolling Stone ahead of the new season, which begins Sept. 21 on NBC.
Green opens the performance on guitar, establishing the song’s familiar groove before Levine joins him on drums. Clarkson and Queen Latifah ease into the rhythm as the arrangement builds.
Levine takes the opening verse on his own before the other coaches join him for the chorus. Queen Latifah and Green handle the following verses, and Clarkson closes out the coaches’ individual turns with her own solo moment, performing barefoot.

Four coaches, two veterans and two newcomers
The performance also introduces the coaching lineup viewers will see when Season 30 gets underway.
Levine and Clarkson return as the experienced members of the panel. Levine enters the season as the reigning champion after his contestant Alexia Jayy won Season 29, giving him his first victory since Season Nine and his fourth overall.
Green and Queen Latifah, meanwhile, are taking their seats in the coaches’ chairs for the first time.
For Green, the new role represents an opportunity to reach viewers who may not already be familiar with his music. He has described The Voice as a “great career stepping stone” that can put him in front of a new audience.
That opportunity comes after a career that Green says has been developing for 15 years, even though he signed his record deal in 2018.
“I signed a record deal in 2018, so I’m fairly new to some people, and people are just finding me now, but I’ve been doing it for 15 years,” Green said. “So there are a lot of things I’ve learned, especially what not to do.”

Riley Green already has his eye on the competition
Green has also opened up about what it will be like competing for singers alongside three established entertainers.
During an interview with Today, he acknowledged that Levine has been part of the show for years and described Queen Latifah as “very, very famous.” But when asked which coach concerned him most, Green singled out Clarkson.
“She’s going to try to get some of my country acts on the show,” he said.
The friendly competition reflects one of the biggest challenges facing Green as he begins his first season: attracting artists to his team while sharing the coaching stage with performers who already have extensive experience in music and television.
What Green wants from his team
When it comes to choosing contestants, Green says he is less interested in finding the most technically impressive singer than in hearing someone who can make a song feel genuine.
“For me, it’s just, I think, a voice that is believable with lyrics,” he said during an appearance on American Songwriter’s Off the Record podcast.
Green acknowledged that plenty of performers can sing extremely well, but he believes a successful career does not necessarily require being “the greatest singer in the world.”
For him, emotional connection matters most.
“If somebody can make me believe what they’re singing about, that always draws me in,” he said.
That approach fits with Green’s own perspective on his career and songwriting. He has spoken about the importance of authenticity in his music and said his gradual rise has given him years to learn from both his successes and mistakes.
As he prepares to guide a new generation of performers, Green said he is “excited about trying to help out some people that are trying to do what I’m doing.”
A new audience and a new role
Green sees his arrival on The Voice as more than a television appearance. He views the competition as a chance to introduce himself to a broader audience while passing along lessons from his own path through the music business.
His career has taken years to develop. Although his record deal came in 2018, Green says he had already spent roughly 15 years working toward the point where he is now.
That experience is something he hopes to bring into the coaching role, particularly when helping contestants navigate the realities of trying to build a career in music.
For Season 30, that perspective will sit alongside Clarkson’s experience as a returning coach, Levine’s history with the show and Queen Latifah’s first appearance in the coaching lineup.
And before the competition begins, the four have already offered viewers a glimpse of their chemistry through their performance of “The Weight.”
