Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers Reunite With Chris Stapleton for Emotional ‘American Girl’ Performance

Nearly nine years after Tom Petty’s death, the surviving original members of the Heartbreakers stood onstage together again Wednesday night in Nashville. With Chris Stapleton handling lead vocals, Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Stan Lynch and Ron Blair opened the 2026 Americana Honors & Awards with a three-song tribute to the music they made with Petty.

The reunion took place at the Ryman Auditorium on September 16, where the Heartbreakers were also honored with the Americana Music Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award. It marked the first time the four original members had performed together since Petty died in 2017, and their first performance together in more than two decades.

Chris Stapleton Leads the Heartbreakers Back to the Stage

Stapleton began the performance with “American Girl,” followed by “Breakdown,” two songs from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ 1976 self-titled debut album.

Behind him was Stan Lynch, the band’s original drummer, alongside Campbell, Tench and Blair. Lynch’s appearance was particularly notable. He left the Heartbreakers in 1994, and before Wednesday night, his only performance with the group after his departure had come at the band’s 2002 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction.

The Ryman crowd responded with a standing ovation as the first part of the reunion came to a close.

Lynch then left the stage, making way for Steve Ferrone, the Heartbreakers’ longtime later-era drummer, and guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Scott Thurston. Stapleton remained at the microphone for “You Wreck Me,” completing a three-song set drawn from Petty’s catalog.

The performance was brief, but its significance was difficult to miss. The Heartbreakers had not returned to the stage together as a full group since Petty’s death in October 2017.

Mike Campbell Reflects on Tom Petty

During the performance, Campbell acknowledged the unusual moment before the band continued with the remaining songs.

“It’s really emotional and sweet to be here,” he said.

The emotion returned later when the Heartbreakers accepted their Lifetime Achievement Award. Campbell became visibly moved while speaking about his longtime bandmate.

“Tom, I’m gonna miss rocking around with you,” he said.

The reunion served as the opening moment of the 25th annual Americana Honors & Awards, an event that also recognized Robert Plant and Dolly Parton with Lifetime Achievement Awards. Parton’s honor was accepted through a video recorded before her death in August 2026.

For the Heartbreakers, however, the night centered on a different kind of return: four musicians who had spent decades making music alongside Petty sharing a stage again.

Why Chris Stapleton Was the Right Voice for the Songs

Stapleton was a natural collaborator for the reunion. His connection to Petty’s music stretches back years, and he has repeatedly cited Petty as one of his most important musical influences.

Stapleton has also worked with Campbell and previously recorded Petty’s “I Should Have Known It” for the 2024 tribute album Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty.

The singer has spoken especially warmly about Wildflowers, Petty’s 1994 solo album. Stapleton has described it as his “desert island” record and explained that discovering it as a teenager helped shape the way he approached music and songwriting.

“No other musical influence is as ever-present in my mind,” Stapleton has said of Petty.

That connection made his role at the Americana ceremony more than a simple vocal substitution. Stapleton was stepping into a catalog that had influenced his own musical identity while performing alongside the musicians who originally created it.

The Heartbreakers Had Previously Rejected the Idea of a Replacement Singer

The reunion was especially striking because the surviving Heartbreakers had previously resisted the idea of touring as a full band with another singer taking Petty’s place.

In 2018, Campbell told Rolling Stone that he did not see anyone as capable of stepping into Petty’s role.

“Nobody can fill those shoes,” Campbell said. “I can’t fill them and I don’t know anybody else that I would want to fill them.”

The band members have nevertheless remained connected to Petty’s music since his death, appearing in partial lineups and other informal settings. Wednesday’s performance was different because Campbell, Tench, Lynch and Blair appeared together as the core original Heartbreakers, with Stapleton providing the vocals.

The appearance was also significant for the band’s history. 2026 marks 50 years since Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers formed, giving the reunion an added anniversary context.

A 50th-Anniversary Tom Petty Box Set Is Coming

The reunion arrives as the Tom Petty estate prepares to revisit the earliest years of the band with a major archival release.

Origins 1971–1978 is scheduled for November 6, 2026, through UMe. The collection covers Petty’s pre-Heartbreakers work and the group’s formative years, including 50th-anniversary editions of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and You’re Gonna Get It!.

The collection also includes the previously unreleased-in-full Live From the Record Plant 1977, the rarities compilation The Cut Out Bin, and No Sleep Til L.A., which gathers early material from Petty’s years with Mudcrutch and the beginnings of the Heartbreakers. The set includes seven previously unreleased songs.

Other formats will include a 4-CD edition and an expanded “uber deluxe” version featuring an 88-page fanzine, Blu-ray and DVD material, including a 1978 BBC performance.

One Night, Three Songs, and a Long-Awaited Reunion

The Heartbreakers’ return to the stage was limited to three songs, but the circumstances gave each one added weight.

“American Girl” and “Breakdown” brought Campbell, Tench, Lynch and Blair together with Stapleton. “You Wreck Me” then expanded the lineup to include Ferrone and Thurston, connecting different eras of the Heartbreakers’ history.

The group also took part in a “Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: 50 Years” panel at the AMERICANAFEST Business Conference on September 17, continuing the anniversary look at the band’s history.

For the members of the Heartbreakers, there was no suggestion that the reunion represented the beginning of a new touring era. Instead, it offered something considerably more contained: one Nashville stage, three familiar songs, and an opportunity for the musicians who built the Heartbreakers with Tom Petty to play together again.

At the Ryman Auditorium, nearly a decade after Petty’s death, the Heartbreakers sounded their songs once more with Chris Stapleton at the microphone. And for a few minutes, the band’s history was no longer being revisited through recordings and archives. It was happening live again.

She Spotted The Difference. Then She Talked Herself Out Of It. Three versions of the same Vincent van Gogh self-portrait appeared on screen. At first, they looked virtually identical. But somewhere in the three images, one tiny detail had been secretly altered — and contestants had just 30 seconds to find it. Easy enough from the sofa, right? One contestant thought she’d cracked it almost immediately. She had an answer. She trusted it. Then she looked again. The extra seconds gave doubt a chance to creep in, and suddenly she abandoned her original choice and switched to another portrait just before locking in her final answer. When the correct image was revealed, the mistake became painfully clear. “Why did I change it?” was essentially the question hanging over the moment as the host reacted to her last-second decision. Now forget what she did. Which portrait would you choose — and would you trust your first instinct when the clock starts ticking?

The Only Connect Answer Looked Final… Until Harry Potter Fans Found A Tiny Detail Hidden In The Wizarding World That Sparked A Huge Debate Over Whether The BBC Got It Wrong ! It was supposed to be a simple quiz moment. Then Harry Potter fans noticed one detail that changed everything. Almost immediately, viewers began debating whether the answer given on Only Connect truly matched the rules of the wizarding world — or whether the show had missed something hiding in plain sight. Now a single clue has transformed a BBC puzzle into a passionate fandom argument. The answer seemed obvious. The detail was not. And Harry Potter fans are not letting this one go.
