Adam Lambert gave fans a major surprise at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards when he suddenly appeared during the George Michael tribute.
The singer joined several other performers onstage for a special medley honoring the late pop icon, with Lambert taking the lead on Michael’s beloved hit Freedom! ’90. His appearance had not been announced before the ceremony, making the performance an unexpected moment for viewers.

Lambert was joined by MNEK, Meek, Saint Harison and other artists during the tribute, which celebrated some of Michael’s biggest songs.
The surprise performance quickly became one of the most memorable parts of the tribute. Lambert delivered a powerful version of Freedom! ’90, prompting several people in the audience to stand and cheer.
Adam Lambert was not the only star honoring George Michael
The tribute brought together several singers for a collection of Michael’s biggest hits.
Sombr performed Faith and Father Figure, while Raye took on Knew You Were Waiting. Teddy Swims also joined the tribute with his version of Careless Whisper.

Sombr added another connection to Michael’s legacy by wearing a black Harley-Davidson jacket originally worn by the singer during his 1988 Faith Tour.
Speaking about the outfit, Sombr said wearing a piece so closely connected to that era felt “surreal” and was an honor.
Michael remains one of the most influential artists in pop music history. He first rose to global fame as one half of Wham! before building a hugely successful solo career and becoming a major figure at the VMAs.
He died on Christmas Day in 2016 at age 53.
The tribute sparked questions before Lambert’s surprise
The VMAs had announced Raye, Sombr, and Teddy Swims as performers for the George Michael tribute before the ceremony. However, the lineup sparked discussion among some fans who questioned whether the performance included enough connection to Michael’s LGBTQ+ legacy.
Michael became an important figure for the LGBTQ+ community and was also known for using his platform to support HIV and AIDS causes.

Some fans on social media argued that openly LGBTQ+ performers such as Sam Smith or Troye Sivan could have been included in the tribute.
Then, shortly before the ceremony, Lambert appeared to hint that something was coming.
The singer posted an Instagram Story featuring Michael’s Freedom ’90, leading some fans to wonder whether he could be involved. Those questions were answered when Lambert walked onto the VMAs stage and took part in the tribute.
His unexpected appearance added another layer to a performance celebrating Michael’s music, legacy, and lasting influence on pop culture.
